Bible Study - James 1 (Pt. 3)

S – But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. — James 1:6–8 ESV

O – Commentary:

Doubting (διακρινόμενος). Compare Matt. 21:21. Not equivalent to unbelief, but expressing the hesitation which balances between faith and unbelief, and inclines toward the latter.

A wave (κλύδωνι). A billow or surge, driven by the wind in lines, and tossed into waves… Hence, in the figure, the emphasis falls on the tossing; not only moving before the impulse of the wind, but not even moving in regular lines; tossed into rising and falling peaks.

Double-minded (δίψυχος). Peculiar to James, here and ch. 4:8. Not deceitful, but dubious and undecided.

Unstable (ἀκατάστατος). Only here in the New Testament. The kindred ἀκαταστασία, confusion, is found in ch. 3:16, and elsewhere.

Marvin Richardson Vincent, Word Studies in the New Testament, vol. 1 (New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1887), 725–727.

A – Can a believer still wrestle with doubt? Absolutely.

A desperate father brought his son to Jesus and cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24). He was honest. He had faith, but he wasn’t sure it was enough. Jesus didn’t send him away. He set the boy free.

So how does that fit with James? The difference is where the doubt goes. James is describing a double-minded person: one foot with God and one foot with whatever else might work. He’s tossed back and forth like a wave. The father in Mark 9 brought his weak faith straight to Jesus. He wasn’t hedging his bets. He was all in, even with his doubts.

Look again at the words in the commentary: hesitation, billows, tossed, undecided, confusion. That’s what life feels like when the winds blow. Plenty of forces and voices push against our faith. It’s easy to take our eyes off the Lord and fix them on the circumstances.

So settle it. What is your foundation: God, or what you see? If it’s God, bring Him your faith and your doubts. Then invite Him to do more than your faith can imagine.

R – Heavenly Father, You are faithful. When the waves of life rise against us, remind us that You are our Rock. It’s so easy to take our eyes off You. Lord, we do believe. Help our unbelief. Steady our hearts and make us single-minded toward You. Accomplish Your will and purpose in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
