Bible Study - James 1 (Pt. 2)

S – If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
James 1:5 ESV

O – Commentary:
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God. Assistance is readily available from “the giving God” (tou didontos theou). To those who lack wisdom, this valuable resource is available for the asking. James assumed his readers would feel the need for wisdom (sophias), not just knowledge. God will not only provide wisdom, but will do so generously, not grudgingly.

J. Ronald Blue, “James,” in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures, ed. J. F. Walvoord and R. B. Zuck, vol. 2 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1985), 821.

A – Wisdom is available. All you have to do is ask.

Not knowledge. Wisdom. Knowing what to do with what you know.

And notice how God gives it. Generously. Without reproach. No lecture. No eye-roll. No “you should have figured this out by now.” He just gives.

So ask. Every day. Here’s how.

First, thank Him. God wants to walk with you and provide for you. Start there.

Second, ask Him to pull your life together. Every experience. Every conversation. Every win and every challenge. Ask God to weave it all into wisdom. He doesn’t waste anything. Your story is raw material.

Third, ask for what you don’t have: His wisdom. The kind that goes beyond your experience and your best thinking. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD” (Isaiah 55:8). That’s the wisdom we lack.

This honors God. And it invites Him to pour into you generously, every single day.

I’ve prayed this way for a long time. I still pray it every morning.

What are you facing today that needs more than your best thinking? Have you asked Him?

R – Heavenly Father, You are Wisdom. Thank You for walking with us and providing for us. Take every experience, every conversation, every win and every struggle, and build them into a foundation of wisdom. Then give us what we can’t produce on our own: Your wisdom, which is far higher than ours. Help us walk in it today, so we can impact others and walk closely with You. Amen.
