Bible Study - Philippians 2
S – Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

O – Commentary:
Nothing was to be done out of selfish ambition (v. 3). The same word (eritheian) appears in 1:17 to describe the attitude of those who opposed Paul. Without question such behavior is of the flesh and not the Spirit (cf. Gal. 5:20, which uses the same word). Vain conceit, meaning "empty glory," was probably the root cause of their selfish ambition.
The two negatives are followed by a positive exhortation: in humility consider others better than yourselves. But, a word of contrast, introduces these words. Humility before God and man is a virtue every child of God needs to strive for. A spirit of pride in human relations indicates a lack of humility before God.

A – Empty glory. What are you chasing today?
Applause fades. Titles change. Self-centered achievement never delivers the fulfillment it promises. Chasing the approval of people is a trap.
Don't hear that wrong. Humility isn't passivity. We are called to work hard, be productive, and steward well what God has put in our hands. The question isn't whether we pursue goals. It's who we're pursuing them for.
Paul gives us the answer. Look beyond your own interests to the interests of others. That's where real fulfillment lives. Success isn't measured by how much glory we collect. It's measured by how much value we add to others along the way.
Build on that foundation, and the goals take care of themselves.
R – Heavenly Father, You love us unconditionally. We don't have to earn it or chase it. Guard us from empty glory. Build into us a foundation of humility that sees and values the people around us. Help us work hard, pursue healthy goals, and empower others in the process. In Jesus' name, amen.
