Bible Study - I Thessalonians 4
S – For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
1 Thessalonians 4:7–8 ESV
O – Commentary:
A holy life demonstrates God's supernatural power at work overcoming what is natural, and it glorifies God. The Greek noun hagiasmos ("holiness") occurs here for the fourth time in eight verses (3:13; 4:3–4). (The verb hagiazō ["sanctify"] is used in 5:23.)... The Thessalonians and later readers of this epistle should realize that to reject these instructions is to reject the Person from whom they came originally, that is, God.

A – Paul is talking about sexual impurity here. But don't miss the bigger principle. Swap in any temptation you wrestle with. Anger. Greed. Bitterness. Pride. The call is the same. God didn't call you to impurity. He called you to holiness.
Here's what makes this serious. Paul says if you brush this off, you're not ignoring a preacher. You're ignoring God. Holiness isn't a church rule. It's a calling from the One who made you.
And here's the good news. He didn't call you to holiness and then leave you to figure it out alone. He gave you His Holy Spirit. God Himself lives in you to finish the work He started.
So what's your plan? White-knuckle it on your own? Or invite the Holy Spirit to do what you can't? A holy life isn't proof of your willpower. It's proof of God's power. Let Him show up and watch what victory looks like.
R – Heavenly Father, we worship You and surrender to You. Holy Spirit, we invite You to work in us today. Shine Your light on every temptation and every impurity we've tolerated. We don't want to settle for less than the holiness You've called us to. Give us the courage to acknowledge it, admit it, confess it, and surrender it to You. Thank You that we don't walk this road alone. Walk in us and through us today so we can walk in victory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
