S – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
O – Before presenting the list of examples, the author defines what faith is: It is acting on what God has revealed about his will and character. • The confidence of faith is based on the God who fulfills his promises. • The word translated assurance means an active certainty that what God has promised will come to pass despite our not yet seeing it.
NLT Study Bible (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2008), Heb 11:1.
A – Faith isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision to act on who God says He is.
Think about the people you trust most. You didn’t trust them on day one. You got to know them, saw how they acted, and watched them keep their word. Over time, your confidence in them stopped being a guess and became a conviction.
Faith in God works the same way. The more we spend time with Him in His Word, in prayer, and in worship, the more we see His faithfulness. And the more we see it, the more we trust Him with what we can’t see yet.
That’s the point of this verse. Faith is being sure of the promise before the answer shows up. Not wishful thinking. Active certainty.
So here’s the question: how well do you know the God you say you trust? Faith doesn’t grow from a distance. It grows by showing up.
R – Heavenly Father, You are Lord of all. Today we put our faith in a posture of growth. We believe in You, and we trust Your will for our lives. Show us more of Your character. Teach us Your ways. Turn our faith into action, so our confidence grows and our certainty deepens as we trust You for what we can’t see yet. Amen.
