Are You Leading from Clarity or Pressure?
“Under Pressure…”
When I hear the word pressure, the 1981 David Bowie and Queen song "Under Pressure" immediately plays in my mind. The song ends with the words repeating over and over — "Under pressure…under pressure…pressure" — and there's something about that repetition that captures exactly how it feels. Pressure compounds. It layers. It sits on you personally, physically, and professionally, every single day.
You are the leader people are looking to for direction — to take them somewhere they have never been. That is pressure. So how do you lead from a foundation of clarity rather than constantly reacting to the never-ending tension pulling at you? Two foundational concepts will make the difference.
Know Who You Are.
God created each of us with purpose in mind. To accomplish that purpose, He endowed you with the exact personality, gifts, talents, and abilities needed to fulfill it at the highest level. The challenge comes when we allow life's events, the words spoken over us, and even our own distorted self-perception to shape us into something far from God's original design. When we recognize those forces and surrender them to God — to be healed, corrected, and forgiven — we are free to walk in the true identity He called us to carry every day.
Know Whose You Are.
Leadership is lonely — but only if you are alone. Knowing that God is with you takes the pressure off of you to be the sole source of vision, execution, and direction. Inviting Him into every aspect of your day gives you a Partner who maximizes your abilities and brings His to bear alongside yours in the journey.
Try this for two weeks: ask God to be present in every aspect of your day — your decisions, your conversations, your quiet moments. Then watch what happens to your insights, your creativity, and your relationships.
Pressure is real. But it was never meant to be carried alone. Implementing these two concepts into the foundation of your leadership will transform you from the lone wolf grinding under the weight — to the empowered leader people are ready and willing to follow.
