Bible Study - Luke 20

S — Scripture
So they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?" But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, "Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's." He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Luke 20:21–25 ESV

O — Observation
This question was never simply about money. It was a carefully constructed trap involving politics, religion, and power. A "yes" answer would alienate the Zealots, who opposed Roman rule and championed Jewish autonomy. A "no" answer would give the religious leaders grounds to hand Jesus over to Roman authorities. Either way, they believed they had Him cornered.

Jesus responded by asking for a denarius — a Roman coin bearing Caesar's portrait and inscription. His answer was brilliant in its simplicity: Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. But the greater weight fell on the second half: Give to God what belongs to God. Since humanity bears the image of God — not Caesar — the implied call was total. Our very selves belong to Him.

A — Application
The commentary is spot on. We live in a world of laws, governments, and systems — and God calls us to honor them. But my soul belongs to God alone. I can live faithfully in both worlds by keeping that order clear: God is first; everything else finds its proper place beneath Him. When I honor Him as the highest authority in my life, it shapes how I think, how I live, and how I engage with the world around me. My mind, soul, body, and spirit become a reflection of Him — even in how I fulfill my responsibilities as a citizen.

R — Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are the one true God, and You alone appoint leaders over us. We will not elevate any man, government, or system above You. Everything we have — our time, our resources, our very lives — bears Your image and belongs to You. Help us to honor You first in all things, and from that posture, to obey the laws of the land in a way that reflects Your character and brings You glory. May the way we live in this world always point back to You.
