Bible Study - Joshua 3

S — And Joshua said to the priests, "Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on before the people." So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people. The Lord said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
Joshua 3:6–7 ESV

O — Commentary:
The Lord then told Joshua how they would make the crossing, and explained to Joshua that this miracle would magnify or exalt him as the leader of the people. It was time to establish Joshua's credentials as God's representative to guide Israel. What better way to accomplish this than for Joshua to direct their passage through a miraculously parted river? After the crossing the people did in fact revere Joshua (4:14), knowing that God was with him.

Donald K. Campbell, "Joshua," in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures, ed. J. F. Walvoord and R. B. Zuck, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1985), 333–334.

A — God knows how to build a leader. Moses could vouch for Joshua once. He couldn't keep vouching for him from the grave. So God did something Moses never could — He backed Joshua up in real time, in front of the whole nation.

Notice what Joshua did first. He didn't posture. He didn't campaign for the job. He picked up the ark and led with God's presence out front. That's the order that matters — obedience first, exaltation second. God doesn't elevate leaders who are chasing a platform. He elevates leaders who are carrying something bigger than themselves.

Israel was about to fight for land God had already promised them. That takes a leader people will actually follow into battle. So God didn't just call Joshua. He confirmed him — publicly, unmistakably — so no one would question who was leading them next.

R — Heavenly Father, we worship and surrender to You. In whatever You've called us to lead, we want You exalted first — not us. Strip away our agenda, our need to be seen, our rush to be validated. Help us pick up what matters to You and walk it out in front of others, and trust You to handle the rest. We believe You confirm what You call. We believe You'll go with us the way You went with Joshua.
