Bible Study - Hebrews 6
S - We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 6:19-20 ESV
O - Commentary:
Christian hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. In the first century, an anchor was an image of stability and safety. • through the curtain: A curtain separated the outer room of the sanctuary, into which only priests could go, from the inner room, the Most Holy Place (Exod 25:10–40). Only the high priest could go into the Most Holy Place, and only once per year on the Day of Atonement (Exod 29:1–46; Lev 16:1–25). Because of Jesus’ extraordinary high priesthood, he has already gone in there for us into the presence of God as our eternal High Priest, and he leads us in with him
New Living Translation Study Bible (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2008), Heb 6:19-20.
A - I went deep-sea fishing recently in about 180 feet of water. When we reached the spot, I expected the captain to drop a heavy iron anchor and chain. He didn't. He used a trolling motor. He punched in our coordinates, and the GPS told the motor exactly how to move to keep us right over the fish. The wind pushed. The current pulled. We never drifted. We were locked on.
That's what hope does. Biblical hope isn't wishful thinking. It's locked on a fixed point, and that point is Jesus. He has already gone behind the curtain into the very presence of God, and he takes us in with him. You can't see the coordinates. You don't have to. They're set.
So when life's storms push and pull, you don't drift. Fear, anxiety and worry don't get the final word. You stay strong, secure and at rest, because your anchor isn't in your circumstances. It's in Christ. You can experience God's power, presence and peace today.
What's pushing on you right now? Check your coordinates. God's got this.
R - Heavenly Father, you are the anchor of our soul. Thank you that Jesus went ahead of us into your presence and brings us in with him. When the wind blows and the current pulls, keep us locked on you. Fill us with your power, your presence and your peace today. We're not drifting. We're anchored in hope. In Jesus' name, Amen.
