Bible Study - Hebrews 3

S — Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
Hebrews 3:5–6 ESV

O — Commentary:
Jesus deserves far more glory for two reasons. First, a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. The Messiah is the one who builds God’s house (see 2 Sam 7:13). The implication is that Moses is part of the house (i.e., God’s people) that God has built. Second, whereas Moses was a servant in God’s house, Christ, as the Son, is the heir in charge of God’s entire house. Sons have greater status than household servants.
3:6 We are part of Christ’s house if we keep our courage. The author could not give unqualified assurance to those who were drifting away from Christ and the church. Those who persevere in the faith have assurance that they are part of God’s house.

New Living Translation Study Bible (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2008), Heb 3:3–6.

A — Be faithful. Stay the course. Finish strong.

Read this passage slowly and you’ll notice something. There’s an order in God’s house. Moses was a servant. A faithful one. Jesus is the Son. The builder. The owner. The heir.

And then there’s us.

“We are his house.” Not visitors. Not guests. His house. We don’t get in by rank. We get in by relationship and faith in the Son.

Here’s where our humanness kicks in. Something in us wants to ask, “Where do I rank? How do I move up the org chart in heaven?” We turn it into a competition.

It’s not.

Everyone in the house is close to the Father. Everyone in the house belongs. The only question the writer of Hebrews asks is this: will you hold fast?

That’s the real fight. Not against each other. Against the drift. Against the distractions. Against the enemy who would love nothing more than to pull you out the front door.

So do the three things. Be faithful. Stay the course. Finish strong. That’s how you beat the devil. That’s how you beat everything life throws at you. That’s how you stay home.

R — Heavenly Father, we worship You and surrender to You today. Thank You for creating us, loving us, and sending Your Son to die for us. Thank You that because of Jesus, we belong in Your house. Give us courage to hold fast. Keep us from drifting. Empower us to finish strong today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
