Bible Study - Colossians 4

S – Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

O – Completion or perfection in Christ includes not only one's private (and prayer) life but also one's public life. To perfect this dimension of one's life in Christ, Paul told believers to be wise in the way they act. This wisdom (sophia; cf. 1:9; 28; 3:16), which is God's, not man's (cf. James 3:13, 17), should be evident to outsiders, that is, those outside the "household of faith" (cf. 1 Cor. 5:12; 1 Thes. 4:12; 1 Tim. 3:7). Also Paul's readers should make the most of every opportunity (lit., "buy up [exagorazomenoi] the time"). They should be ready "in season and out of season" (2 Tim. 4:2) to proclaim Christ. In addition, their conversation (logos, "word, discourse, talking") should be always full of (lit., "in") grace ("gracious, pleasing"; cf. Col. 3:8–9) and yet seasoned with salt (i.e., pure and penetrating; 4:6). In this way they could answer everyone who asked "the reason for the hope" (1 Peter 3:15) they had.

A – Wisdom and words change lives. But it starts with us. God's wisdom and His Word go to work on our hearts first. We don't manufacture wisdom. We receive it. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead you, and He'll use the Word as the key that unlocks it.

Then something shifts. What God pours in starts flowing out. Our wisdom shapes how we walk. Our words start carrying His heart.

Here's the question: How do you talk to people who don't know Jesus yet? Paul says our speech should be gracious and seasoned with salt. Grace makes it inviting. Salt makes it real. Not preachy. Not fake. Just honest words from a heart God is changing.

And don't miss the urgency. "Make the best use of the time." Every conversation is an opportunity. The coffee line. The ballfield. The breakroom. When we speak with the heart of God, people start to see Him. And He looks a lot more inviting than they expected.

R – Heavenly Father, You are the God of wisdom and truth. Thank You for pouring Your wisdom and Your Word into us. You promised to give wisdom generously to anyone who asks (James 1:5), so we're asking today. Fill our hearts, and season our words. Help us make the most of every moment and every conversation. Let us be salt and light to everyone we meet today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
