Bible Study - Acts 2

S - Scripture

And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."
Acts 2:38–39 ESV

O - Commentary

Peter's answer was forthright. First they were to repent. This verb (metanoēsate) means "change your outlook," or "have a change of heart; reverse the direction of your life." This obviously results in a change of conduct, but the emphasis is on the mind or outlook. The Jews had rejected Jesus; now they were to trust in Him. Repentance was repeatedly part of the apostles' message in Acts (v. 38; 3:19; 5:31; 8:22; 11:18; 13:24; 17:30; 19:4; 20:21; 26:20)...
The gift of the Holy Spirit is God's promise (cf. 1:5, 8; 2:33) to those who turn to the Lord, including Jews and their descendants and those who are far off, that is, Gentiles (cf. Eph. 2:13, 17, 19). Acts 2:38–39 put together the human side of salvation ("repent") and the divine side (call means "to elect"; cf. Rom. 8:28–30).

A - Application

This is the gospel. Stripped down to its studs.

Repentance is a throne swap. God off the sideline, God in the driver's seat. Us off the throne, back where we belong. That's not a one-time feeling. It's a daily redirect — mind, mouth, and hands, all pointed toward Him instead of ourselves.

Baptism follows. It's not just a church tradition. It's a flag planted in the ground. A public "Jesus is Lord of my life" moment that everyone watching gets to see.

Then comes the gift nobody earns. The Holy Spirit doesn't just show up — He moves in. Permanent resident. The power source for a life that actually honors God instead of just talking about Him.

Repent. Declare it. Get empowered. That's the whole pattern, right there in two verses.

R - Response

Heavenly Father, You are God. Savior. Present with us right now.

Thank You for a gospel simple enough for a child to grasp and strong enough to hold the weight of a lifetime. Thank You that we don't just get to hear this message — we get to live it and hand it off to somebody else.

Let it be real in us first. Then let it move through us to everyone You put in our path.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
