Bible Study - Acts 16

S — And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
Acts 16:6–7 ESV

O — They then proceeded north to eastern Mysia and tried to enter Bithynia, but again they were prevented from doing so by the Spirit of Jesus. How these hindrances were accomplished is not stated. It may have been circumstances, a word of prophecy, a vision, or some other phenomenon. At any rate, God planned for people in both Ephesus and Bithynia to hear the gospel at a later time.

Stanley D. Toussaint, "Acts," in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures, ed. J. F. Walvoord and R. B. Zuck, vol. 2 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1985), 398.

A — Two doors slammed shut. Paul didn't kick either one down.

That's the part we skip past. He had a plan. God had a better one. And Paul was secure enough in who he was following to let the "no" stand.

Ever notice how closed doors feel like failure in the moment? They're not. They're redirection. Asia and Bithynia weren't off God's map — they were just off His calendar. Paul would reach them both, later, and it would matter more because of the timing.

So what door is closed in front of you right now? Stop rattling the handle. God isn't wasting your wait.

R — Heavenly Father, You see the whole map — we only see the next step. Teach us to recognize Your "no" as fast as we recognize Your "yes." Give us ears sharp enough to hear the Spirit's voice over our own agenda. We surrender our timeline for Yours, trusting that what You close, You close on purpose, and what You open, You open at exactly the right time. Lead us today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
